How to craft effective talking points for your career conversation (we share fill-in-the-blank scripts!)

How to professionally ask for what you want in way that feels authentic to you and builds connection with your manager

What to do when you get a "no", "I'll need to think about it", or your request is brushed off, so that you can increase the likelihood of getting a 'yes'

  • You have an "ask" you want to make in your next career conversation, and want tools to maximize your chances of getting a "yes"
  • You want to know how to effectively communicate your value and make the "business case" for your ask
  • You are worried about your relationship with your manager going sour if you ask for what you want and are told "no", and are looking for a way to ask that supports that relationship no matter the outcome
  • You want to know exactly what to do if you get pushback on your ask, be it a "no", "I'll think about it", or being ghosted on email follow-up
  • You have struggled in the past to ask for what you what, and find yourself procrastinating on asking because you don't know precisely what to say

HOW THIS WORKSHOP WILL TRANSFORM YOUR CAREER

When you lack confidence...

You struggle to speak up and share your ideas in meetings and when challenged.
You're constantly second-guessing yourself and struggle to take action.
You undermine your expertise with weak language (i.e. "Can I ask what might be a question?)", qualifiers (words like 'just'), and unnecessarily apologizing.
You seek constant direction and external validation as a temporary confidence boost.
You say "yes" to everything, and as a result struggle with overwhelm, overwork and delegation.
When your confidence takes a hit, you have a hard time recovering.
You are undervalued and underpaid, but don't ask for that raise you deserve.

When you're confident...

Speaking up comes naturally and without a second thought.
You are able to make decisions and complete your work without agonizing over them.
You are able to make decisions and complete your work without agonizing over them.
You communicate clearly and concisely, in a way that gains the respect of your co-workers.
You know how to access your inner confidence and be resilient, regardless of your outer circumstances.
You set clear boundaries, and can show up at work with less stress and easily prioritize your work.
You know you are good at your job and worthy of getting paid what you're worth, so you ask for that raise.

You have lifetime access to all program materials.
4. Will my firm pay for this workshop?
While we can't guarantee it, organizations have paid for this workshop in the past.

The first version of this workshop was designed as a customized 3-part series at a Fortune 500 organization's request (our Instructor had to sign an NDA and can't share that firm's name!) to help their women engineers and technologists speak up for themselves in career conversations with their managers. The organization paid for employees to participate. If you need a one-pager/same email to send to your manager to get funding for your attendance, email us at stephanie@engineersrising.com to receive those scripts.

A second option (if there are 6 or more in your firm interested in attending), is for us to bring this workshop to your organization. Contact stephanie (stephanie@engineersrising.com) for pricing and availability.
5. Will you be offering this workshop again in the future?
This is the first public offering of this workshop (it has been run in the past into women's employee groups within organizations). We have no immediate plans to offer it again, and can say with certainty it will not be offered again in 2023. Future workshops of this type (if any) will depend on demand.

Her work started with the book and 1:1 empowerment coaching for rising and current women STEM leaders. Today, it has expanded to professional speaking and developing leadership and power skills training for women-led employee resource groups, teams, and organizations. In the last two years alone, she’s reached over 6000 technical professionals of all genders through her coaching, keynotes, presentations, and workshops.
As a mom of three girls, engineer, author, and professional speaker, Stephanie is determined to help women step into their power, redefine leadership norms, and use their unique genius to impact the world.

The first step: effective self-advocacy, specifically being able to confidently ask for what you want at work. This workshop offers a step-by-step framework and practice having career conversations with your manager, so you can step into your leadership potential.
